What do silk presses and graduation have in common? Both deserve to shine—Hairbrella was made to protect one of them from the other.

What do silk presses and graduation have in common? Both deserve to shine—Hairbrella was made to protect one of them from the other.

Hey Hairbrella Family,

It's graduation season—and every year around this time, I’m taken right back to where this journey really began: on the campuses that shaped me.

As many of you know, I went to Spelman College. And like clockwork, it would rain every. single. time. I stepped out of the salon. It was almost laughable—until it wasn’t. What made it worse? Spelman was the birthplace of my natural hair journey. I, like 85% of my class, grew out my perm after taking courses like African Diaspora in the World. Suddenly, the rain wasn’t just a minor inconvenience. It was a full-blown natural hair hazard 🙆🏽♀️

I'll never forget one specific day that sealed the deal: I was in law school at UGA, headed to my very first on-campus interview. Resume on linen paper. Navy suit dry cleaned. Hair laid. Confidence intact. Until… the sky fell out. No umbrella. Just an Office Depot bag that I tied around my head like a last-minute science experiment. I walked into that interview drenched and defeated. 😭

I went home that night and searched for a hat that could actually protect my hair. What I found? Plastic bonnets that trapped heat and made my silk press swell before I even got where I was going, and traditional bucket rain hats that barely covered anything.

I found this old photo I took of my screen showing the "Best Selling" rain hats on Amazon. 😭

They leave hair exposed to moisture in the air  defeating the whole point of trying to keep it styled and smooth. None of it made sense for protecting hair in unpredictable weather. That night, I didn’t just mourn my interview. I imagined a better way. I imagined Hairbrella.

What started as a personal necessity quickly became a mission. And now, years later, I’m seeing reviews from teachers standing in pick-up lines, college students walking between classes, and parents buying Hairbrellas for their graduates to protect their blowouts from dorm to dining hall.

It's full-circle moments like these that remind me why I do what I do—and who I do it for. Every student hustling across campus. Every teacher braving the elements. Every graduate stepping into their next season with their head held high (and dry). 🙌🏽

We've got styles for every vibe—from sleek rain scarves for those East Coast winds to breathable rain bonnéts for our curly girls holding it down in the South.

So whether you're gifting a new grad or grabbing one for yourself (because, adulting), our Memorial Day Sale is your moment.

Rain or shine,

P.S I did get that job.😅  But it felt like the universe wanted to make sure I knew my true purpose before I walked through that door. I’ve always been passionate about entrepreneurship, and that rain-soaked moment made it crystal clear: this was the problem I was meant to solve. That day on campus didn’t just disrupt my hair — it rerouted my destiny. 💫
